Switches

Switches are the backbone of the network — from access switches on each floor to high-speed leaf/spine fabrics in the datacenter. This section covers Cisco Catalyst and Nexus, Juniper EX/QFX, Huawei CloudEngine and Aruba. Specify port count and type, PoE needs, uplink speed and licence tier to get an accurate offer.

Choosing Switches: what to check

Points worth knowing before you buy or request a quote. Any other questions can go in the request form for our technical partners to answer.

Campus or datacenter switch?

Campus switches (e.g. Catalyst 9200/9300) connect users, phones and access points and usually offer PoE. Datacenter switches (e.g. Nexus or QFX) provide 10–400 G ports, deeper buffers and selectable front-to-back airflow.

How do I size the PoE budget?

Add up each device's draw (cameras, phones, APs) and keep about 20% headroom. Wi-Fi 6 access points usually need PoE+ or UPOE. The PoE budget also depends on the power supply fitted to the switch.

Stack or standalone?

Stacking turns several switches into one logical unit with simpler management and redundant uplinks. It needs the series-specific stack module and cables, which are often ordered separately.

What role does licensing play?

On many current series, features such as advanced routing or cloud management depend on the licence tier (e.g. Network Essentials vs Network Advantage at Cisco). State the tier and subscription term in your request.
