Power, UPS & PDU

Most datacenter outages start with power, not servers. This section covers UPS systems, rack PDUs, batteries and power distribution from brands such as APC and Vertiv. Specify the real load (in watts), required runtime, input supply (single- or three-phase) and the outlet types your equipment uses.

Choosing Power, UPS & PDU: what to check

Points worth knowing before you buy or request a quote. Any other questions can go in the request form for our technical partners to answer.

How do I size a UPS?

Add up the real load in watts (not PSU nameplate ratings) and keep 20–25% headroom. Mind the power factor: a 10 kVA UPS does not necessarily carry 10 kW. Use our UPS calculator to estimate runtime too.

Online or line-interactive?

Online (double-conversion) UPSs give clean output with zero transfer time and are the datacenter standard. Line-interactive units cost less and suit small racks on fairly stable mains.

Basic, metered or switched PDU?

Basic PDUs only distribute power. Metered PDUs show consumption and help prevent overloads. Switched PDUs let you power-cycle each outlet remotely — useful for lights-out sites.

How long do UPS batteries last?

Sealed lead-acid batteries typically last 3–5 years, and high room temperature shortens that sharply. Periodic testing and timely replacement cost less than an unexpected outage.
