Catalyst 9000 or Nexus? Choosing Cisco switches without costly re-designs
The question we hear most in projects: "C9300 or Nexus?" The short answer: it depends on where the switch lives, not how fast it is.
The logical divide
- Catalyst 9000 is built for campus: StackWise, high PoE budgets, DNA Center integration — the right enterprise access/distribution choice.
- Nexus 9000 is built for datacenters: Clos fabrics, deeper buffers, ACI/NX-OS. When east-west traffic rules, Nexus rules.
Three common traps
- Using Catalyst as datacenter spine — shallow buffers guarantee pain.
- Using Nexus for user access — no PoE, no StackWise, wasted spend.
- Ignoring licensing deltas; in Nexus, feature licenses are a large share of BOM.
